The Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, is today leading a high-level delegation, including EU Ambassador Nona Deprez and other partners, on a five-day field visit to Buchanan and Greenville.
The mission aims to assess the progress of the Light Up South-East (LUSE) Project, a European Union-funded initiative focused on rural electrification in South-eastern Liberia.
The LUSE Project is expected to connect over 12,000 customers in Buchanan and 4,344 households in Greenville, installing hundreds of LED streetlights.
A 2MW mini-hydro power plant on the Sinoe River will further support Greenville’s power needs.
Additionally, Barclayville will benefit from a solar PV plant and mini-grid network, improving access for remote communities.
The delegation, including energy sector stakeholders and contractors, is committed to ensuring reliable and affordable electricity reaches Buchanan, Greenville, and Barclayville—boosting economic growth and development.
The visit comes ahead of the rainy season to accelerate project implementation.
The team will engage local authorities, stakeholders, and beneficiaries, emphasizing the project’s significance and encouraging community support.
Meanwhile, the long-awaited installation of light poles has officially begun in Buchanan City, marking a significant milestone in the city’s electrification efforts.
This initiative is expected to enhance public safety, improve nighttime visibility, and contribute to the overall development of the area.
Grand Bassa Development Officer Moses Henry confirmed that a dedicated team is actively working to plant light poles throughout the city.
The project aims to provide better lighting for residents, businesses, and visitors, reducing the risks associated with poorly lit streets.
“This is a major step toward making Buchanan City safer and more accessible, especially at night,” Henry stated. “We are committed to ensuring that all key areas receive proper lighting as part of our broader efforts to improve living conditions and support economic growth.”
Local residents have welcomed the project, expressing optimism about its impact on security and daily activities.
Many believe that well-lit streets will help deter crime, facilitate transportation, and promote a more vibrant night time economy.
The electrification project is part of a series of ongoing infrastructure developments aimed at modernizing Buchanan City.
Authorities have assured the public that the installation process will continue systematically until all designated areas are adequately covered.
As the work progresses, city officials encourage cooperation from the public and emphasize the importance of maintaining the new infrastructure to ensure long-term benefits. See Full text on page 8.
