UP Local Leadership Elections Expected Soon

By Bill W. Cooper
Opposition Unity Party (UP) has disclosed plans by the party to begin the conduct of its local leadership elections within the 15 counties and 73 districts across Liberia.
The UP Standing Committee on Elections and Campaign Secretary General, Alex Gborie stated that the first phase of the elections will run from February 16-17 in Montserrado covering the 17 electoral districts.
He explained that phase two of the process will be conducted in Grand Bassa covering the following counties which include Margibi, Lofa, Bong, Nimba, Gbarpolu, Bomi and Grand Cape Mount Counties from February 19 to 23, 2023.
Gborie further disclosed that the final phase will run from February 25 to the 1st of March in Rivercess, and delegates’ counties are Sinoe, Grand Kru, Maryland, River Gee and Grand Gedeh.
He made the discloser yesterday, February 15, 2023 during the releasing of the electoral guidelines and aspirants’ eligibility criteria at a press conference in Monrovia.
According to him, the party’s decision was triggered as a result of the amended version of the UP Constitution which was unanimously endorsed by delegates during the UP recently held convention in Gbarnga, Bong County.
He said the amended version of the UP Constitution which was unanimously endorsed by the delegates at the July 2022 National Convention held in Gbarnga, Bong County provides that the county and district leaders of the Party be elected by delegates of the respective conventions every six years.
He maintained that the Standing Committee on Campaigns and Elections was then constituted by the UP National Chairman, J. Luther Tarpeh and mandated by the leadership of the party to conduct peaceful, transparent and credible elections at the county and district levels.
Gborie added, “Therefore, this summary guideline is intended as a policy document to govern the Elections of the vacant positions.”
