Rivercess Electoral District #1, Rosana G.D.H Schaack has expressed with deepest regret the death of Cllr. Charles W. Brumskine, former standard bearer and political leader of the opposition Liberty Party-LP.
Cllr. Brumskine died on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 in the United States of America where he had gone to seek medical attention before meeting his untimely death.
Speaking to this paper on Friday, November 22, 2019, Rep. Schaack said, the loss of Cllr. Brumskine was a blow to the Liberty Party, Grand Bassa County and Liberia as a whole.
She called on partisans of the Liberty Party to see the works and efforts made by the late statesman in upholding and respecting the rule of law as the best in modern day democracy.
Hon. Schaack further stated that many politicians see the fight to redemption as violence and ruthlessness, but encouraged Liberians to emulate Cllr. Charles W. Brumskine as a father of democracy, who during his days in the legal field, respected the law and encouraged all to refrain from violence and use the court of law as ending crisis.
She also encouraged Liberians to see the late Cllr. Brumskine as a man of words, when in 1999 he escaped the country after being threatened by followers of former Liberian President Charles G. Taylor.
Meanwhile, Cllr. Brumskine on 2004, contested the 2005 presidential elections as a member of the Liberty Party, promising to reconcile the country as well as improve the economy and infrastructures.
Cllr. Brumskine received nearly 14% of the vote, at least 6% less than the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who herself was a candidate in the 2005 elections, but decided not to support any candidate in the runoff which ended between the CDC of President George M. Weah and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
