The president of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Julius Kanubah, has called on Liberian journalists and media professionals to prioritize agriculture and environmental reporting to strengthen public discourse on critical issues such as food production, food security, and livestock management.
Kanubah made this appeal during the opening of a one-day Agricultural Journalism Seminar held in Paynesville. He stressed that specialized reporting on agriculture and the environment is essential for institutionalizing professional reporting practices and fostering informed national discussions.
He highlighted the importance of acknowledging the diverse range of stakeholders involved in agricultural supply chains, including farmers, government agencies, and both local and international partners.
Kanubah underscored that producing high-quality, fact-based, and ethical journalistic content about agricultural and environmental issues is vital for ensuring food security, driving economic growth, and enhancing Liberia’s prosperity.
Kanubah also reminded journalists of their critical role in holding power to account through impartial and investigative reporting on agriculture and environmental matters.
He called for sustained technical and financial support for agricultural and environmental journalism, noting that these sectors cannot thrive in isolation.
The seminar was organized by the Liberia Agricultural and Environmental Journalists Network (LAEJN) and brought together key national and international stakeholders.
Among the notable participants were Steve Werblow, president of the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ), representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Volunteers for Sustainable Development in Africa (VOSIEDA), Liberia Agricultural Commodity and Regulatory Authority (LACRA), and the Cooperative Development Agency (CDA).
