The government in partnership with Agriculture Turnkey Projects (Agrotop), has begun the construction of a US$26 million poultry facility in Careyburg, Montserrado County.
During the tour on Friday, May 2, 2025, President Joseph Boakai, was accompanied by the Minister of State without Portfolio, the Minister of Agriculture, and other key government officials, and said the initiative is part of his administration’s efforts to reduce food imports and improve food security.
He stated that Liberia must end the importation of chicken and eggs, warning that foreign poultry products pose a serious health and safety risk to citizens.
“We don’t know how they treat those chickens before they’re sent here how they grow them, what they inject in them, or how they are killed,” President Boakai said.
“That is why we are investing in our own production. It’s safer, healthier, and better for our economy,” he stressed.
The Poultry Project, which is being developed on 50 acres of land, is expected to produce over 200,000 eggs per day once it is fully completed.
On Monday, March 3, 2025, during the sixth cabinet meeting held at the Executive Mansion, President Boakai stressed the need for Liberia to move beyond discussions and take concrete steps toward agricultural self-sufficiency.
“Agriculture is crucial for Liberia’s future, and it’s time to move from talk to action,” he stated, calling on officials to lead efforts in implementing policies that enhance local food production.
President Boakai highlighted the poultry industry’s potential to reduce Liberia’s reliance on imported chicken, create employment, and improve food security.
He urged government agencies to collaborate in strengthening local production and ensuring adequate support for farmers.
Expanding the poultry sector, he noted, could significantly impact the economy by providing a steady supply of affordable protein and reducing import dependency.
At the 38th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa on February 16, 2024, President Boakai also called on the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to support Liberia’s poultry sector as part of his administration’s drive to boost local food production.
During a high-level meeting with IFAD President Alvaro Lario, he outlined his government’s goal for Liberia to produce 80% of its eggs and poultry products by the end of 2026.
He emphasized that reducing the country’s reliance on imports would strengthen the local economy and create jobs.
Meanwhile, during the regular weekend press briefing, Presidential Press Secretary Kula Fofana described the project as a major step toward making Liberia self-sufficient in poultry production.
She emphasized that this initiative goes beyond just eggs and chickens it’s about creating jobs, producing fertilizer, establishing feed mills, and developing packaging and distribution systems, all driven by Liberians.
“The project is fully Liberian-owned, and construction and operations will be handled by Liberians trained and supported through Agrotop,” she concluded.
