The Office of the High Commission of Human Rights (OHCHR) has welcomed the creation of the office of War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC) and the appointment of Jallah Barbu as its Executive Director.
The OHCHR’s Resident Representative, Christian Masuka, also termed such development as an important moment for Liberia, expressing his organization’s fullest support to the establishment of the court, ensuring that war victims receive justice.
Mr. Masuka has at the same time encouraged the WECC, ED Barbu to work hard, ensuring the transformation of the political will into reality where the rights of the Liberian people will be prioritized.
He spoke recently, during a round table stakeholders’ engagement, with the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission and the Independent Human Rights Commission (INHCR), with a renewed commitment to work with the WECC to promote human rights and accountability.
In separate remarks, the LACC Executive Chairperson, Alexandra Zoe, and the Chairperson of the INHCR, Dempster Browne called for collaboration with the War and Economic Court Office for its success.
Meanwhile, the WECC’s Executive Director Barbu, said he sees the task as a service and was upbeat about the overwhelming support from integrity, human rights and civil society organizations.
With just two weeks in office and with the effective skeletal staff, Barbu disclosed that much has been done in getting WECC Office to roll out some important duties and responsibilities as enshrined in the TOR of the Executive Director.
He added at the gathering that his office has started holding talks with various stakeholders, who, according to him, are excited for the new development in the transitional justice action.
