The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), in collaboration with WaterAid Liberia has launched the National WASH in Healthcare Facilities Roadmap for the period of 2024 to 2028.
This strategic initiative aims to prioritize and address critical water, sanitation, and hygiene challenges affecting healthcare facilities owing to the fact that access to clean and safe water and poor sanitation infrastructure has been an issue for years across the country.
The goal of the Roadmap is to also increase universal access to sustainable and adequate WASH services in healthcare facilities, improving quality of healthcare delivery, reduce healthcare-associated infection, safeguard the well-being of patients, healthcare workers among others; in an effort to enhance the accessibility and quality of healthcare services in Liberia.
NPHIL and WaterAid Liberia comprehensive roadmap aimed at strengthening the delivery of WASH services within healthcare settings recognizing the undeniable linkage between WASH facilities and improved healthcare outcomes.
Officially launching the roadmap over the weekend, the Director General of NPHIL, Jane A. Macauley underscored the importance of the Roadmap in Healthcare Facilities as a key to improving the country’s water and sanitation issues.
She disclosed that the roadmap will contribute greatly to mitigating diseases and save healthcare workers including those who go to the facilities to seek care and thanked WaterAid Liberia and other partners for their support towards the development of the roadmap.
DG Macauley added, “This initiative also represents a critical step forward in transforming our healthcare facilities into places where patients, healthcare workers, and visitors can access services in a safe and healthy environment.”
“It reinforces our commitment to achieving universal health coverage and improving overall health outcomes in Liberia including our challenged WASH sector which is in a dire need for robust reform approach,” she asserted.
WaterAid Liberia Country Director, Chuchu Selma commended the Technical Team for the time and expertise in the development of the document, calling on the Liberian Government and its partners to ensure that the roadmap is sustainable.
Mr. Selma then pledged his organization’s continuous collaboration with the National Public Health Institute of Liberia and their partners in making sure that the already challenged WASH sector is resuscitated.
