The National Election Commission (NEC) has finally set July 29, for the holding of the Montserrado County Senatorial and District #15 Representative by-elections.However, the Commission said it is still calling on the government to make available the remaining US$1 million on or before the new date set for the process.
The NEC in its assurance that the conduct of the both elections is on course for the said date, said without the balance budgetary allotment for the successful conduct of the elections, electoral materials will not be transported across the districts and the over 10,000 polling staff expected at the various polling stations on elections day might not be deployed.
Addressing a news press conference yesterday, Chairman Jerome Korkoya said the NEC remains committed to delivering credible elections and called on all to work together for the peaceful conclusion of these elections.
Meanwhile, the NEC boss said they have put in place several measures to allow a more opened process of the voter’s identification for the both Senatorial and Representative by-elections.
Clarifying what he termed as some unfounded speculations from the public regarding the issuance of new voter ID cards and the possibility of people who are not duly registered to vote in place of the actual voters, Cllr. Korkoya noted that these kinds of speculations are not possible in the face of the safeguard and control measures already in place.
