The National Elections Commission (NEC) has certificated two new political parties ahead of the 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections in Liberia.

The two parties certificated by the NEC on Friday are the Democratic National Allegiance (DNA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia the (EFFL).

The National Elections Commission (NEC) is an autonomous public commission that is responsible to conduct elections for all elective public offices and to administer and enforce all elections laws throughout the Republic of Liberia.

Historically, the NEC has its origin from the Constitution of Liberia. At its inception, NEC was called Elections Commission (ECOM), deriving its constitutional strength from Chapter X, Article 89.

Presenting the elections certificate, the Commission’s chairperson, Davidetta Browne Lansanah stated that the certification of the two political parties followed months after submitting letters of intent to be fully registered political parties in the country.

The NEC Boss at the same time reminded all Liberians that election is everybody’s business and as such, it is incumbent upon all Liberians to ensure a peaceful election at all times.

She added that it is also important for all Liberians to commit themselves to the rule of law of seeking redress to all elections dispute matters and as the surest way to sustain peace and democracy at all times in Liberia.

Prior to the certification ceremony, the Commission’s Co-chairperson, Cllr. P. Teplah Reeves challenged the Executive Committee of both parties to always use the 1986 Constitution and the New Elections Law as guide in their political activities in the country.

She further noted that the certification exercise of the two parties followed a thorough and in-depth vetting process, adding, “And it shows that the DNA and EFFL met the minimum requirements set forth for the establishment of a political party.”

In Response, the DNA and EFFL Executive Committee Chairpersons, Sumo Nyinulo and Emmanuel Gonquoi vowed to always use the country’s Constitution and the New Elections Law to champion real and true democracy across the country for all Liberians.
