Liberia Launches 1st National Students Tax Day

The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Local Empowerment for Accountability and Decentralization Activity (LEAD), and the Ministry of Education, has launched the inaugural National Students Tax Day, an initiative aimed at fostering tax literacy among young Liberians.
Delivering the keynote address at the event held in Monrovia s, a leading expert in trade, tax, and governance, Decontee T. King-Sackie, spoke on the theme, “How Tax Education Empowers Students to Become Tax-Compliant Citizens and Spur Economic Growth.”
She emphasized the critical role of tax education in shaping responsible citizens and fostering economic resilience adding, “Tax education equips students with the knowledge to understand why taxes exist and how they contribute to societal needs.”
Mrs. King-Sackie remarks highlighted the importance of demystifying taxation for young people, stating that fostering early awareness builds a foundation for voluntary compliance and fiscal responsibility.
Drawing from global examples, Mrs. King-Sackie noted successes in countries like Finland, India, and South Africa, where innovative tax education programs have significantly improved compliance and engagement.
She urged Liberia to adopt similar strategies to empower its youth, preparing them to contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
Representing USAID-LEAD, George AKL inspired the students to view tax compliance as both a civic duty and a cornerstone of national development.
He explained how taxes support essential services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, encouraging students to embrace their roles as future contributors to Liberia’s progress.
“Paying taxes is not just a legal obligation; it is an investment in your community and the nation,” he stated.
He also emphasized the importance of holding the government accountable for the effective use of tax revenues.
Speaking on behalf of the LRA, Khalehla Mensah underscored the significance of the day, describing it as a “historic moment” for Liberia.
She announced plans to integrate tax education into the national curriculum at the senior high school level, ensuring that all students are equipped with the knowledge to become informed and compliant taxpayers.
“The theme, ‘moving to Billions: Celebrating Taxpayers’ Impact,’ reflects our vision for a thriving Liberia, where every citizen plays a role in driving economic development,” Mensah said.
The debate competition held during the event showcased students’ understanding of tax concepts and their impact on national development.
The winners were awarded trophy, with organizers praising all participants for their enthusiasm and dedication.
As Liberia embarks on this initiative, the collaboration between the LRA, the Ministry of Education, and USAID-LEAD sets a precedent for future educational programs aimed at empowering young citizens.
The launch of National Students Tax Day marks the beginning of a transformative journey in Liberia’s tax education landscape.
