The Liberia Internet Governance Forum (IGF) yesterday provided the media with an overview of the 2022 program and ensures the crucial role of the media in the multi-stakeholder group.
The event will gather several journalists as well as internet governance stakeholders across all sectors both in person and online to deliberate on the crucial role of the media in internet governance and also the need for cybersecurity awareness through the event.
Giving the overview, the National Conveyor Peterkin Quaye mentioned that the Liberia Internet Governance Forum aims to place Liberia on Global internet governance agenda and that Liberia’s IGF emanated from the need to gather relevant stakeholders from the country in one place to discuss the current state, necessities and emerging internet related issues in Liberia.
According to him, this event will facilitate a platform for increasing awareness of internet governance issues amongst young people in Liberia, adding that multi-stakeholders will be opportune to participate in the building process of the information society to teenagers and young people from different countries of the world.
Speaking further, he mentioned that this year’s event began on August 29 and will end on September 8, 2022 which is an annual meeting of stakeholders who will all come together to talk about internet development issues in Liberia.
Also speaking, the project manager at the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, Nalon Kaiwe, pledged the Government of Liberia’s support and that despite the Ministry’s role is to regulate internet usage but other institutions must help in crafting laws and policies for the Liberia Internet system.
Meanwhile, the president of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Charles Coffey, described the move as beneficiary to the media land scape of Liberia.
He added that the introduction of the Liberia Internet Governance Forum will significantly help guide Liberian journalists against cyber insecurity and the use of data.
