Authorities of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) have turnover firearms and ammunition arrested by agents of the LDEA in the counties to the Liberia Small Arm Commission.
According to the leadership of the Agency, the arms and ammunition turnover was discovered during the LDEA operation carry out across the nation.
The administration of the LDEA noted that their decision to turn over the arms and ammunition arrested by them is predicated upon the fact that the Small Arm Commission of Liberia is responsible by law to regular weapons in the country.
Arms and ammunition turnover include six pieces of single barrel long range, Winchester long range one, eight pieces of single barrel pestle and four hundred (400) gun shots.
Authorities of the LDEA said the arrest of arms and ammunition done by the agency isn’t the first of its kind carryout in the country, adding that the agency is not only interested in combating narcotics drug but also in fighting crimes across Liberia.
At the same time, authorities of the LDEA have called on government agencies under the Ministry of Justice to respect the mandate given to the LDEA by the Government of Liberia, quoting Section 22. 104 of the recent LDEA Act which states that “all functions of the specialized division of Narcotic Division of the Liberia National Police (LNP) and National Security Agency (NSA) are hereby transferred to the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA).”
Following the reading of this section by the leadership of the LDEA, they noted that they have observed some institutions under the Ministry of Justice who are in the business of arresting narcotics drug but are not turning the drugs over to the LDEA, which by law they are responsible to supervise.
For her part, Madam Bennietta Jarbo, Vice Chairperson, at the Liberia Small Arm Commission praised her Liberian security counterpart for the turning over of arms and ammunition arrested in the country.
She told them that the arms and ammunition turnover will be turn to the LNP tail a particular day set by the Small Commission in consultation will the LNP to destroy these weapons.
The turning over ceremony was held in the office of the Director General of the LDEA and as attended by the three heads of the LDEA including its Spokesperson and representatives of the Liberia Small Arm Commission, among others.
