LBA Abusing Weah’s Gesture! -As New Looked Sports Commission Still On Renting Spree -How Has Basketball Benefited?

The Sports Commission, one of Liberia’s fewest homes of basketball activities in the country, continues to be marketed by the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) at the detriment of the sports.
Over the years, the LBA has succeeded in using the facility as a major source of income solely managed by those at the helm of the leadership of the LBA. The LBA’s leadership headed by Rufus Anderson on countless occasions reduced the Sports Commission to a public rental center without reinvesting the money (proceeds) for the improvement of the facility.
On numerous occasions, national league matches were suspended and postponed just to accommodate outsiders after the LBA had collected huge sum to host none sports related activity despite failing to give the facility a facelift.
Though the basketball hierarchy had repeatedly benefited from government’s annual allotment purposely intended to assist the institution in the forward march of the sports, the multiple investments has proven futile as the look of the facility does not commensurate with the amount of money already made available to the LBA.
In the wake of public outcry demanding the LBA’s leadership to initiate off-season activities so as to keep the facility busy and also help improve the performance rate of players, the association continues to lease the Sports Commission for outsiders to conduct non-sports related activities, while players remain hungry for basketball related initiatives to sharpen their skills.
What is even more troubling is the fact that the newly looked Sports Commission which was recently upgraded through the intervention of President George M. Weah, is yet to be officially dedicated but has already been rented out by the LBA.
Instead of rallying the districts, communities and/ or local club teams to host serious basketball competition that will showcase emerging basketball’s talents, the LBA has embarked on a rental spree of the Spots Commission.
According to experts, the idea behind the newly installed basketball floor sponsored by President Weah, is to provide an enabling sporting environment and proper facility for basketball athletes to improve their talents. It now seems that the current leadership of the LBA lacks the willingness and ambition to translate opportunities into fortunes, as the Sports Commission has been reduced to a rental facility.
The reality is that the current LBA leadership played no major role in convincing the Chief Patron of Sports to undertake the reform at the Sports Commission. The project was reportedly initiated based on a plea from the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC) boss, Philipbert Brown, who requested the Liberian leader to assist with the betterment of the Sports Commission in the interest of the sport and those ambitious basketball players.
On Sunday, November 24, the LBA leased the Sports Commission for a day musical festivity, while another seven day churches’ revival beginning at November 25-December 1 is expected to be held at the same venue. The minimum of US$250-300 is required as rental fees and interested institutions are demanded to make full payment before using the facility.
The LBA has also leased the Sports Commission for three days (Nov 22, 30 & Dec 6) to a group only identified as Scorpion Incorporated.
Another entity, Spark Group of Companies, earlier booked the Sports Commission for three days (Dec 11, 13, 20) to host what they termed as 2019 University Basketball Championship. None of the above mentioned activities are held in collaboration with the LBA, that is to say, the basketball authority collected rental fees from each of the groups to host their respective programs.
Additionally, the Sports Commission is already engaged for December 22, as the day has been set aside for the album launch of Minister Ericson Joe under the title “Don’t Give Up.”
According to insider, the basketball leadership is even willing to transfer its elections to another venue if a client emerges and pays in full for the facility for that same day.
The current LBA’s leadership has received over US$400,000 from National government as contribution towards the development and improvement of basketball related activities in Liberia, but interestingly, the Anderson’s leadership got nothing tangible to show for all the financial support.
Several basketball stakeholders and players have frowned on the Anderson’s leadership for its failure to prioritize the growth of the sport for the last eight to ten years, despite the huge financial contribution from government and other partners.
Mr. Rufus Anderson is contesting again for the third term to be retained as President of the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA). Though he cannot point to tangible achievements as LBA boss for the last eight years, Anderson is optimistic that the stakeholders will retain him for another four years.
Others have insisted that the Anderson’s dynasty must be aborted so as to make way for the ushering of fresh legs, who will now champion the interest of basketball to an altogether new level.

The LBA’s election has been rescheduled for November 30, 2019 at the Sports Commission on Broad Street. Writes D. Webster Cassell

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
