The Foreign Ministry has failed to produce the two foreign interpreters as requested by Criminal Court ‘C’ Judge Blamo Dixon in order to fast-track the ongoing US$ 100 million drugs case.
According to the Ministry, the Guinea Bissau national and Portuguese suspects that the court is requesting interpreters from; do not have embassies in the country, and as such, they are unable to produce interpreters for the two countries.
It can be recalled that on Thursday, February 14, 2023, the defense Team requested the court for the employment of interpreters to both interpret from the Portuguese and the Arabic Languages to the English Language and vice versa.
On the other hand, the Prosecution also requested the court for jury sequestration. The two requests made by prosecution and defense counsel were granted by Judge Dixon.
Today’s hearing was also called for continuation due to the Foreign Ministry’s failure to produce the two interpreters that will help fast-track the ongoing US$100 million drugs case at the Temple of Justice.
According to the court’s document, the Foreign Ministry through its Deputy Minister wrote the court requesting the Judge to prevail on Dee Maxwell Saah Kemayah to forward a Diplomatic note to the Embassy of the United States of America to aid the court with two interpreters to translate from Portuguese to Arabic Languages to English and Vice Versa.
Meanwhile, the judge has reassigned the case for hearing on Monday, 27 February 2023, at 10:30AM.
