Amidst Wilmot Paye’s suspension as Unity Party’s National Chairman for allegedly violating the party’s constitution, the former Deputy Foreign Minister, B. Elias Shoniyin, has emphasized the need for Chairman Paye’s removal as National Chairman of said party.
Addressing the Montserrado Youth Wing as keynote speaker during its first Annual Congress, Mr. Shoniyin disclosed that the decision of the party to have suspended Wilmot Paye as party Chairman is in line with the National Executive Committee (NEC’s) seriousness of restructuring and reconciling the party.
“I acknowledged with great appreciation, the recent action of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, under the guidance of Ambassador Boakai, for the first major step of restructuring and reconciling the party,” he said.
The former Minister lamented that the suspension is not sufficient and went on to support the Montserrado Youth Caucus’ previous statement, calling for the immediate removal of Wilmot Paye as National Chairman of the party.
Referring to himself as Partisan, Mr. Shoniyin asserted that the party’s interest is bigger than any individual’s interest; something according to him should be observed as it is in the best interest of the country.
Admitting that the party is at a crossroad, Mr. Shoniyin suggested that the party makes urgent and difficult decisions as part of the restructuring process of the party.
Speaking further, the former Deputy Foreign Minister urged the Youth Congress to be proactive and oppose anyone in the party who lacks political vision.
“I urge the Youth Congress to invoke a deep sense of thinking with objectivity in your action, and oppose any form of political manipulation by narrow-minded people who lack sound political objectives,” he averred.
These comments came from Mr. Shoniyin in the wake of Wilmot Paye’s decision to release statement against January 6 protest headed by famous talk show host Henry Costa and officials of the Collaboration Political Parties, a situation which precipitated his suspension as chairman of the party.
Mr. B. Elias Shoniyin is now seen actively affiliating with the Unity Party, following his resignation as Deputy Minister for Foreign Services at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Shoniyin resigned as Deputy Minister in the Weah’s administration of May last year for professional and personal reasons.
