The Liberia Football Association (LFA) is saddened by the death of former Liberia coach Dominic Vava George.
Vava died at the John F. Kennedy medical center following a protracted illness on Friday.
The LFA and President Mustapha Raji had been catering for Vava and were later buttressed by President George Weah-led government when it took the full financial responsibility of his medical bills at the SOS Clinic in Congo Town.
President Weah, who had been making unannounced contributions, was concerned about Vava’s deteriorating health condition.
“He was a fantastic man and loved by so many players. His spirit and courage was incredible. To fight the illness that affected him so many times really showed the strength of a man.
“I really felt his passion for football one day when I knew he was sick but he showed-up for work. I politely asked him to go but he decided to do push-ups to show he was physically strong to coach my team [Gardnersville FC].
“It is sad we have lost him. My deepest condolence goes to the family, especially Mimi George [his daughter], who took care of him while he was sick. May God grant him eternal rest,” said Raji.
“It is with sadness I write to inform our sporting brothers and sisters about the passing of coach Vava George at the JFK hospital. RIP,” sports minister Zeogar Wilson wrote on Facebook.
Vava’s legacy came when he was part of a coaching trio, including technical director Weah and deputy coach Frank Jericho Nagbe, who guided Liberia to the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Mali and narrowly missed out on the World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea.
He coached many clubs, including Gardnersville FC, Monrovia Club Breweries and Mighty Barrolle.
