Farmers In Sinoe Appeal To Gov’t., Others

Sinoe County, Liberia –A group of farmers under the banner ‘Dugbae River Agriculture Multipurpose Cooperative Society’ (DRACS) is appealing for farming implements and others essential support.The Chairperson of the DRACS, A. Worwin Nyongbe, disclosed that they are presently in need of food and finance to purchase seedlings and to motivate members of the group so as to enhance their agricultural activities as they are clearing some hectares of land for this year’s farming activities in Dugbae River Statutory District # 2, Sinoe County.
According to him, the group which was organized some three year ago has acquired its Article of Incorporation and attestation from the Cooperative Development Agency (CDA) as a bona-fide group but that they have been struggling over the years due to lack of support.
He stated that the organization is carrying out two major projects in the Menieh Kabada and the Nyanpon Quitarzon Communities; explaining that they have some rice seedlings but that is insufficient for this years’ farming season.
He averred that most of the inputs like pepper seedlings, eddoes among others are being purchased from Nimba, Bong and Lofa counties.
Mr. Worwin added that the Kru ethnic group is traditionally known for their fishing expedition, so their engagement in the agricultural activities is mainly in the area of food to help improve the livelihoods of the people and attract some of the youths to the project because the community is hugely engaged with gold mining, palm plantation.
Speaking further, the Instructor at the Sinoe Multilateral High School indicated that they intent to expand their activities in Jadae Tifegein and Dueh Jadae in Jadae Statutory District along the River Dugbae and is appealing to President George Manneh Weah, members of the Sinoe Legislative Caucus and other humanitarian groups to assist them.
“We want to begin planting by March 2020 and so we need cutlasses, hoes as well as wheelbarrows and diggers including gasoline, food along with power saw among others for the successful implementation of the project, he pleaded.
He also lauded the president Pro-temp of the Liberian Senate, Albert Chie, Representative Mathew Zarzar including Madam Cecelia Cuffy Browne for identifying with the group noting that the project is a major initiative that requires the government’s intervention as it strives to invest in Agriculture and buttress government’s pro poor agenda.
