The Superintendent of Bong County, Hawa Lolyah Norris, has lauded the Liberia National Police (LNP) Bong Detachment for erecting traffic booths at the Far East Junction of the City of Gbarnga.
This initiative is intended to regulate the flow of traffic at the intersection and reduce the frequent occurrence of accidents in the area.
Speaking during the dedicatory ceremony of the booths on Monday, October 21, 2024, Superintendent Norris commended the police for their proactive approach in addressing the rising number of road accidents in the heart of the city.
Madam Norris stressed the need for more collaborative efforts between the local government, the police, and other stakeholders to ensure road safety in Gbarnga and its surrounding areas.
She noted that drivers, particularly those coming from Gompa, must respect traffic rules and red lights to prevent further loss of life.
She also announced plans to write to the Superintendent of Nimba, as many of the speeding drivers on the Gbarnga-Monrovia Highway are believed to be from Nimba.
The traffic booths were installed following a tragic accident on Friday, October 18, 2024, which resulted to the death of one person.
In response, the LNP Bong Detachment quickly erected two locally-made traffic booths on Saturday, October 19, to help manage traffic in the area and prevent further incidents.
Bong County Police Commander, Fasu V. Sheriff, explained that the initiative would be extended to other key intersections in Gbarnga, including the Administrative Building Junction, C.B. Dunbar Comprehensive Hospital, and Old One Plus One Junction.
Recent data from the Police Public Safety Division reported 157 road accidents in September 2024 alone, resulting in 23 fatalities and numerous injuries.
The Gbarnga-Monrovia Highway recorded the highest number of accidents and fatalities, underscoring the need for immediate intervention.
Superintendent Norris, has meanwhile reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the initiative, promising that all necessary resources would be provided to ensure the success of the traffic regulation’s measures.
She stressed that the booths are just the beginning, and further actions, such as installing speed breakers, would follow to slow down vehicles in an effort to ensure drivers’ compliance with traffic regulations.
