Education Minister Anus Sonii has urged African leaders to ensure good Governance in all material respects with integrity.
He served as a guest-speaker for the African Methodist Episcopal University Graduate School (AMEUGS) African Studies & Researcher Forum (ASRS) 25th Annual Conference in Monrovia.
The Liberian Education Minister, also urged to guarantee constitutional transfers of power between governments, and minimize what he calls “appetite for military intervention” which at all times interferes with the constitution at the detriment of the country’s forward march.
He spoke at the commencement of the three-day at the African Studies & Researcher Forum (ASRS) 25th Annual Conference which is being held for the time at the AMEU Campus in Monrovia
“The justice system should blindly serve all of the population, regardless, guarantee food security, give functionality to the economy & allow the private sector to flourish; cultivate respect for traditions and cultural originalities while modifying harmful practices that are subject to resentments among the population,” Minister Sonii who is an official of the Congress for Democratic Change governing party averred.
The three-day Annual Conference which began on Thursday, June 23, is expected to end 25, 2022, which among other things, is intended to bring RESEARCHERS together to Monrovia particularly at AMEU’s facility due to its requisite and required campus as well as instructional researchers that can equally share researchers’ works with other African continental researchers.
At the opening ceremony which program brought together scores of intellectuals both from Liberia and the African Continent includes, Dr. Prof. Augustine Konneh, Dean of Graduate Studies, AMEU, Dr. Alvin E. Attah, President of AMEU, Eze Gabe Nwosu, the Umuopara Obiangwu of Imo State Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Prof. George Klay Kieh, Jr., Dean Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Republic Affairs, Texas Southern University & President of African Studies and Research Fourm.
Liberia’s Education Minister, Sonii in a 15-page presentation, also detailed a long tale of how Africans struggled and how the white colors regarded Africans particularly with popular believe that Africans were held under colonial dominance and bondage, believed, unlike what they were made to believe before that Africans were not capable to govern themselves.
Fast forwarding, Minister Sonii indicated that the African continent underwent a transition from colonialism to self-determination. “Today, Africans can boast of self-governance and regional and continental bodies that project inter-African cooperation,” Minister Sonii said.
He intoned that the struggle for a truly independent Africa is still ongoing, stating that “What we have in Africa is political independence”. And what is required [most] for Africa to make the continent stronger is “Economic Independence”.
“I believe we can succeed if we believe that change is an indispensible course of life that must and always does come,” Minister Sonii averred.
The MOE Boss said, Africa is still undergoing the rigors of social and political changes-stating, struggle among the elite for power and this is become the new norm. Democracy was alien to the African traditional leadership system.
“As we peruse history, we will realize that the ancient African leadership system was dynastical and monarchical. All powers were vested in a king. After his death, the next in the family line was enthroned. Embracing democracy therefore was a complete overthrow of the traditional one family style lifetime leadership,” he stressed.
The professor further asserted that democratic dispensation now overwhelms Africa. “This culture of suffrage, the right to choose, has become the new political norms to all Africans and governments. Far from perfection yet, safely on course to the way of governance where the people decide,” The Minister stated
The Education Minister has urged the African continent to empower Africans through education. Speaking further he said, “Educate the population sustainably, whatever it takes. Enabling them to become scholar’s researchers for all purpose based on their capacity.”
“Create technical and skills education to cater for the majority who may not be scholastic enthusiasts, but needs a job. Invest much into STEM Education. Emphasizing science and science-related education to support innovation & research,” he said.
