A fan of the UEFA Champions League has reportedly been murdered in Grand Kru County, Liberia, by 19-year-old Prince Gadden following an argument over Real Madrid’s painful exit from the competition at the hands of Arsenal in the quarterfinals stage.
According to reports from the southeastern region of the country, Peter C. Nebo, believed to be 31 years old, was killed by Gadden in Jlohdeh Town, on Wednesday April 16, 2025 after the match where fans of Real Madrid around the world had hoped for a comeback following their 3-0 loss the previous week at the Emirates Stadium.
The victim and the accused, according to the police charge sheet, got entangled in a heated debate about the match result shortly after Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid to get to their first semifinal after nearly 15 years of European football.
Witnesses say emotions were running high, particularly among the many Real Madrid supporters in the area, who were devastated by the team’s elimination from the prestigious competition.
The argument quickly escalated when Gadden allegedly accused Nebo of mocking him over Real Madrid’s defeat. Reports suggest that Nebo taunted Gadden about the loss, which led to a personal exchange between the two men.
At some point during the argument, the confrontation turned physical, with Gadden striking Nebo on the forehead with a stick. The blow left Nebo unconscious, and he was rushed to the nearby J.J. Dossen Hospital in Harper, Maryland County, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Liberia National Police (LNP) responded swiftly to the scene of the crime. Gadden was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. In his statement to investigators, Gadden admitted to striking Nebo but insisted that the act was not premeditated. He claimed the situation escalated after Nebo insulted him and mocked his mother, which led to his violent outburst.
The incident has left the local community shaken, as the passionate rivalry surrounding sports, particularly football, has led to such tragic consequence. Authorities have emphasized the importance of managing emotions and exercising restraint, especially in heated debates surrounding football matches.
Gadden is currently being held in detention at the Barclayville police station, pending trial. The case has sparked conversations about the role of sports in people’s emotions and the potential for violence when tensions run high.
