The Liberian Government through the LRRRC with support from UNHCR has handed over 269 Ivorian refugees who opted for residency passports in Liberia.
The program took place at the Monrovia City Hall and the UNHCR officer-in-charge, Marie Claire Tchangna said the passports were given to the former Ivorian refugees after a vetting process by the Ivorian authority; describing the exercise as an important step for Ivorian who opted to live in Liberia.
Speaking through an interpreter, the Director of DAARA Cote D’ Ivoire, Sam Fiegolo Emmanuel, thanked the Liberian government for the opportunity provided to former Ivorian refugees to reside in Liberia, and at the same time, congratulated the host communities for the hospitality that led to their integration.
He said issuing the passports to 269 former Ivorian refugees was the beginning of hope for them.
LRRRC’s Executive Director, Patrick Worzie said as part of the Government’s ARREST agenda that talked about the rule of law, Liberia will always remain a safe place for protection.
He said it is easier to live in another country with documents and appealed for the Ivorian government to fast-track the issuance of passports because currently, out of the 927 Ivorian refugees who opted for local integration, only 369 qualified for passports.
