Medica-Liberia, Actionaid Address Binding Economic Issues

Medica-Liberia, in collaboration with Actionaid, yesterday conducted a policy dialogue on Economic Justice issues, highlighting the plight of the Liberian Women.
The forum which was held at the PA Rib House on the Airfield, Matadi looked at issues affecting women in Liberia, mainly land ownership, Sexually Gender Based Violence-SGBV, as well as understanding policy gap also affecting women.
Other topics discussed at the event were, challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, participants’ understanding of the role of the ministry in providing policy framework for women’s rights and perspective of participants on economic issues that reduces women ownership of land and GBV.
During the program, some of the participants, local business women, explained some of the challenges faced by them in meeting up with the current status of the country’s economic.
51 year old Rebecca Jacobs, Martha Johnson, 60 year old, and Yatte Morris of the Old road Market explained that the current wave of price hike of commodities on the Liberian market, couple with huge transportation is causing serious embarrassment to them.
The three business women called on the government and partners to assist them render some supports that will enable stay on pile with other Liberian business people.
At the same time, Windor Dorko Tarplah of the Law Reform who served as moderator of the program was seen professionally drilling the audience. Most of them, mainly business women and persons from Civil Society Organization-CSO’s were seen keenly observing.
Actionaid Policy and Campaign Manager Joseph Mazvamuse, along with Medica-Liberia boss Caroline Bowah strategically addressed some of the challenges affecting the Liberian women.
For her part, the Medica-Liberia Boss encouraged the women to remain vigilant as they approach their rights with dignity and professionalism. Cllr. Ruth Jappa who also explained the importance of land ownership was clear when she to the jammed packed hall that the issue of divorce, and marriages should be handled with caution. The event was sponsored by Actionaid and implemented by Medica-Liberia.
