In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling that reinstated House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, a powerful message of statesmanship and sacrifice is emerging from one of Liberia’s leading cultural voices.
The CEO of the Liberia National Heritage and Culture Development Association (LNHCDA), Solomon Weawea, is calling on Speaker Koffa to step down from his post—not as a retreat but as a bold and unifying act of national healing.
Weawea’s comments come just two days after the Supreme Court ruled that Koffa’s removal by the so-called ‘majority bloc’ of lawmakers was unconstitutional, as the ruling reaffirmed Koffa as the legitimate presiding officer of the House of Representatives, bringing an end to weeks of political turmoil that threatened to paralyze the lower chamber.
“Mr Speaker, you have already won—not just in court, but in the hearts of Liberians; you fought not for power but for the rule of law. Now, rise even higher—step down as a hero and unify the Legislature.”
According to Weawea, this is the moment for Koffa to turn victory into legacy, noted, “Negotiate for the full reinstatement and benefits of every member of the Rules of Law Caucus who stood by the Constitution during this crisis.”
He urged. “And then, resign with honour. That would be the highest expression of patriotism—putting Liberia above self.”
Weawea announced that his organization will bestow upon Speaker Koffa a Gold Medal as “Leader of the Era of Politics Since 1847”—an unprecedented title that places Koffa among Liberia’s most distinguished public servants.
“Your name is already carved in the stone of history. This medal is not just an award—it’s a symbol of the kind of leadership our country desperately needs: strong, humble, and sacrificial,” he added.
