Boakai Meets Lawmakers Ahead Of Inauguration

By Bill W. Cooper
The upcoming legislative election is already shaping up to be a heated battleground as President-elect, Joseph Boakai, has begun rallying lawmakers to support Representative Richard Koon for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
This move is seen as a direct challenge to the current favorite for the Speakership, Representative Fonati Koffa, setting the stage for a tense and potentially divisive political showdown on Monday, January 15, 2024.
On January 9, 2024, 37 newly elected and reelected Representatives attended a called meeting by President-elect, Joseph Boakai, at his residence, promising their unwavering support to Montserrado County District 11 Rep., Richard Koon of Unity Party’s (UP) Speakership ambition in the upcoming 55th National Legislature.
The meeting was attended by Vice president-elect, Jeremiah Koung; Bong County Senator, Prince Moye; Maryland County Senator, James Biney, and the Political leader of the Movement for One Liberia, Macdella Cooper.
Lawmakers attending the meeting revealed that discussions with the President-elect were centered on his vision for the country, as well as their endorsement for Koon’s Speakership bid.
They also emphasized that Koon’s vision resonates closely with President-elect Boakai’s vision for a better and new Liberia, which, they said, is also part of their agenda, thus pledging their unwavering support in making Koon Speaker.
Also, buttressing the lawmakers’ assertion, the Director of Political Affairs in the office of the President-elect, Mo Ali, confirmed the meeting of Boakai and the lawmakers, but clarified that there was no commitment made during the process.
According to him, the meeting was intended for the President-elect to acquaint himself with the newly elected and reelected lawmakers, noting, “Yes, the meeting was held and the President-elect did plead with the lawmakers to support Rep. Koon’s Speakership bid.
And it is because Koon is a member of the UP, which the President-elect is heading. So, as per the party’s mandate, it is a fact that he supports the party’s ticket, but to clarify, there was no threat or and finical commitment made between Boakai and lawmakers.”
However, as the January 15, 2024 Legislative election looms, Boakai’s involvement in the race for the Speakership has raised concerns among political pundits and other Liberians who fear that his interference might undermine the Legislative Branch.
Traditionally, the selection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives is an internal matter for the Legislature, who will have to cast their ballots between the contesting candidates, but Boakai’s public support for Koon has now brought into question his quest to ensure an independently functioning Legislature.
Rep. Richard Koon, a seasoned lawmaker, emerged as a leading figure in the House’s Speakership race against Rep. Koffa of the CDC, aimed to protect President-elect Boakai’s agenda.
Koon’s platform emphasizes a focus on strengthening legislative performance, rebranding and restoring the sanity of that august body, which he emphasized aligns closely with Boakai’s vision for a more robust and independent Legislature.
On the other hand, Rep. Fonati Koffa, who is the current Deputy Speaker and frontrunner for the Speakership, has garnered significant support within the Legislature due to what his colleagues termed as his experience and track record of legislative accomplishments.
Koffa’s platform centers on promoting economic growth and stability, ensuring check and balance, coupled with advancing key government initiatives to address pressing national challenges.
Meanwhile, critics of Boakai’s involvement to call lawmakers to support Rep. Koon’s Speakership said his interference undermines the independence of the Legislature, eroding the democratic principles of separation of powers, as well as checks and balances.
But in contrast, supporters of Boakai’s stance assert that the President-elect has a legitimate interest in ensuring that the leadership of the Legislature reflects his administration’s policy priorities and agenda.
They added that Boakai’s proactive involvement in the race for the Speakership is a manifestation of his commitment to driving meaningful legislative reform and cooperation, thereby justifying his efforts to influence the outcome.
As the political maneuvering intensifies, the outcome of the fiercely contested battle will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the future trajectory of Liberia’s governance and the balance of power between the Executive and Legislative branches.
