Will Weah Desert UNGA For Campaign? -Addresses Session Today

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is an annual event that brings together global leaders for a high-level debate that retrospect and discuss pertinent world issues however, according to information, President George Weah is expected to return home earlier than expected.

Information reaching us said, the Liberian leader will be cutting short his stay in the United States in order to continue his campaign tour to the leeward parts of the country, as the General and Presidential Elections are only a few weeks away.

Meanwhile, the Liberian Chief Executive is among over 140 world leaders attending this year’s session and he will be among several others to make a remark at the opening of the UN-GA’s 78th Session today, September 20, 2023.

Already, there are speculations that President George Manneh Weah might inform his foreign counterparts about his re-election and seek their support in his endeavor.

President Weah is also expected to reassure UNGA and the world of his unflinching commitment to uphold a free, fair, inclusive, and transparent election.

He is also expected to call on the world for her collective effort in addressing climate change, democracy, and action to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as addressing terrorism in Africa and the world at large.

The 78th Session of UNGA is being held under the theme: “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and Its SDGs towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress, and Sustainability for All.”

It is being presided over by the Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, New York; Dennis Francis, who was elected as President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly by acclamation on June 1, 2023.

It can be recalled that President Weah who first addressed UNGA in 2018 will be making his final participation during his first tenure as President of Liberia as this is his sixth time participating in the event.

It is anticipated that the President, in addition to addressing the assembly, will use the opportunity of the side events to engage his counterparts about moral and financial support for the development of his country.
