The Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) and the Unity Party (UP) are without doubts the two key opposition political institutions in Liberia to date which if not meant to challenge the ruling CDC’s grip on power and democratic reforms, it will just be best to safe Liberians the headache.
Since the two political parties began preparations by naming their running mate amidst attacks from supporters of the ruling party; it is expected that the solemn goal of the opposition would have remained to unseat the Weah-led government but that is becoming far from reality with barely two weeks leaving to more serious activities of the election.
Genesis 11:1 says, “And all the earth had one language and one tongue,” so were the opposition parties that initially formed the CPP and in Gen. 11:2, “It came about that in their wandering from the east, they came to a stretch of flat country in the land of Shinar, and they made their living place.”
Apparently, what broke the Carmel’s back is Gen 11:4 when they agreed by saying, “and let us make a great name for ourselves, so that we may not wander over the face of the earth,” and apparently it is that ‘name’ the UP/CPP are fighting to make thereby losing target of what their ultimate goal is as oppositions.
Just on Sunday, Nimba County Senator, Prince Johnson, also known as a controversial statesman in the body politics of the country, stressed that any attempt by Liberians to elect a Cummings-Brumskine ticket would contradict the principles and vision that Liberia was built on by its founding fathers.
He warned, “Liberians, be mindful of how you vote during this critical elections because we are at the crossroad of our country. Don’t vote for that ticket called Fixer 1 and 2; reject that evil ticket.”
However, the Nimba Senator who has also supporting another opposition bloc by endorsing the presidential bid of Unity Party standard bearer, Joseph Boakai statement comes day after Mr. Alexander Cummings officially announced Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine, as his running mate to throw jabs.
Both candidates have emphasized their commitment to democratic and economic reforms, including tackling corruption and promoting job creation, as well as their plans to address key issues such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
Mr. Cummings, following the 2017 presidential debate where he openly voiced his support for ‘Gay’ rights in Liberia has for years been drawing criticism from some Liberians including other political opponents for his open confession of being a supporter of homosexuality.
As Liberians gear up to face the polls and elect a new President and Vice President including 15 Senators and 73 Representatives to lead Liberia for the next six years, Sen. Johnson said the best person to lead Liberia at these critical time is Ambassador Boakai.
On April 28, 2023, former Vice President Boakai named the political leader of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) Jeremiah Koung, as his running mate.
Preaching during his Christ Chapel of Faith Ministry regular Sunday’s service on May 28, 2023, in Paynesville, Senator Johnson further accused the CPP of being composed of homosexuals and if possible, lesbians.
Sen. Johnson who went to reaffirm his belief that homosexuality is a sin that has no place in the Liberian society said, “This is sinful and against the will of God, and we Liberians should unite and reject the Cummings-Brumskine ticket.”
“But guess what, we have uncovered their deeds and this is it, this government has already signed the ‘Gay Law’ and Cummings is now being used to reduced Boakai’s votes for Weah to win to enable his government to locally domesticate the ‘Gay Rights Law’ to favor Cummings and his likes.
Sen. Johnson also accused Mr. Cummings and Cllr. Brumskine of being “elitist” and having no real connection to the people they seek to lead, and instead, he urged Liberians to consider supporting the Boakai-Koung ticket which he said have a better understanding of the challenges facing everyday citizens.
