The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Kttack Lim, and the IMO member States celebrate the second International Day for Women in Maritime.
On May 18, global maritime industry fêtes and celebrates women in the maritime business and the occasion is intended to promote the recruitment, retention and sustained employment of women and raise their profile in the international seaborne trade, strengthen the IMO’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality and support endeavors to address the current gender imbalance in maritime.
On the second observance of this singular day, under the 2023 theme ‘Mobilizing Networks for Gender Equality,’ the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) argued that issues surrounding gender inequality are among the most pressing socio-economic and political issues during this time and recognizes gender equality as a fundamental human right and the foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.
This year’s theme could not be more timely and appropriate, for it is high time that the interests and profile of women were accentuated in this male-dominated industry, and gender inequality and its inherent problems were given prominence on all global networks.
