The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) Commissioner, Cllr. Dempster Brown has given Liberians hope of the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia despite the loss of confidence in their own government’s ability to establish same.
Speaking at programs marking the UN ceremony commemorating 75th years of Peace Declaration held at the Monrovia City Hall, Cllr. Brown intimated that the Commission was established to foster peace in Liberia.
“We must respect the rule of law so that we will not experience what is happening in other countries; if we do not respect the rule of law, there will be problem and that is, those who committed crimes must be punished,” Dempster stressed.
In his worded statement, INCHR Boss stressed that, “We have our monitors in the counties aimed at making sure that there is a rule of law. We will make sure that rule of law is adhered to; all those who are committing crimes will be brought to justice.”
“I don’t even care how long it will take, there will be War & Economic Crimes Courts in Liberia,” Commissioner Brown stated.
Also the Chairperson of National Civil Society Council of Liberia (NCSCL), Loretta Pope-Kai also buttressed the efforts of the INCHR and explained that since the end of the 14 year civil war, the country is now fighting a deeper war of injustice, disregard to the rule of law, civil society actors continue to be harassed, bully, threatened and intimated on a daily basis, with members of their family also being targeted.
Predicated upon these, she asserted that the establishment of war and economic crimes court still remains a matter of urgency, as Liberians continue to be frustrated over the closure of investigations into mysterious deaths across the country, which she maintains, have become business as usual.
These anomalies, she stated, have made the youthful population to become more violent to the extent that the country is headed into a lawless state, in which the government at most times, operate when it is being pressure.
