United States Agency for International Development (USAID’s) sponsored West Africa Biodiversity & Climate Change Programme; First Lady Clar Marie Weah’s She’s You Movement; Fauna & Flora International (FFI); Partners in Development (PADED); and the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) are under legal threat. They are accused of “cheating or intellectual property theft” which infringed on the rights of Liberia’s revolutionary singer, Zack Roberts, whose songs “Sweet Liberia” and “Keep on Trying” are been used for promotional purposes for the above.
Addressing a news conference yesterday in Monrovia, Finley Karnga, Legal Counselor of Zack Roberts, said his client (Zack Roberts) about three (3days) ago informed him how these organizations have misappropriated his property rights.
He said these institutions allegedly, jointly, and severally created derivatives works; which they are broadcasting to the public through various media outlets without been licensed.
Karnga noted that because of this, his client (Roberts) have done all within his means for these organizations to secure license agreement with him for these songs, but they have rejected such efforts to have this matter resolve.
“They continue their wanton and reckless disregard for Roberts’s property rights, which is jealously guarded by the Constitution, international treaties to which Liberia and United States are members,” he noted.
Therefore, Karnga continued: “Roberts seeks the assistance of the Liberian media and other individuals listening to this broadcast, that USAID’s Biodiversity and Climate Change Programme and her partners to desist from further broadcasting of Roberts’s songs and to quickly secure license for the use of the songs.”
He then warned that otherwise, he will have no alternative but to seek legal means in protecting his client (Roberts’) property rights.
