The Inquirer is a leading independent daily newspaper published in Liberia, based in Monrovia. It is privately owned with a "good reputation".

Where Is Varlee Telleh?

There are reports that Officer Varlee Telleh of the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) City Police Department has gone Missing In Action (MIA) since August of this year, and family members, friends, and well-wishers are worried about his wellbeing.
Varlee was accused by Liberia’s former Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) Chairperson, Cllr. Jerome Verdier, of allegedly attacking the former Chief Justice, Gloria Musu Scott, and her family, under the command of Monrovia City Mayor, Jefferson Koijee.
On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, an unknown person attacked Cllr. Scott’s Brewerville residence and horribly murdered her daughter, Charloe Musu, and injured others in the house.
On February 28, 2023, Liberia National Police (LNP) Inspector General, Patrick T. Sudue, told a news conference that Varlee Telleh was the individual accused as a person of interest in the brutal attack against the former Chief Justice.
The accused person was invited by the LNP for inquiry on March 1, 2023, but was released on the same date due to the lack of evidence to link him to the crime.
As the case is being heard by the Supreme Court of Liberia, there are growing concerns in the public about the whereabouts of Mr. Varlee Telleh, who was suspected as the person to have carried out the attack on Scott and her family, as this Paper has been reliably informed that he has gone missing, with no trace of him anywhere.
According to a family member whose name we will not mention due to the principle of confidentiality, Varlee told close family sources that he was assigned a motorbike to carry out a special assignment on behalf of some of his bosses and has not returned.
“He told us that he was going out of town for an assignment and promised to be back the next day. We only heard that he was involved in an accident the next day and was taken to the hospital,” our source said.
“We have visited all of the hospitals in town and there is no trace of him being there,” she observed.
When asked as to who exactly may have sent Mr. Telleh, our source said when he’s going on these outside jobs, he won’t say the name of the person who is sending him. He would just say his bosses.
On Monday, November 27, 2023, the Head of Communication of the Monrovia City Corporation, Mr. Pekeleh Gbuapaye, informed the Inquirer that Mr. Telleh is still in the employ of the MCC and that he was doing great, “Patrolman Telleh is still in the employ of the MCC and was out on an assignment.”
“Are you a security officer or What? I have told you that he is in our employ. I cannot tell you his whereabouts, but I can assure you, he is doing great,” the Head of Communication at the MCC noted.
However, an officer of the City Police corroborated Mr. Gbaupaye’s information that Mr. Telleh is still with the MCC, saying, “Mr. Telleh is around, but you will not see him because he is assigned with the mayor,” something another officer refuted.
“Officer Telleh has never been around here since the campaign period and we are worried about his wellbeing. The last time I heard about him was when it was speculated here that he was involved in an accident, but no one has ever told us where the accident occurred, who were involved and which hospital they took him to,” the sad looking officer observed.
Before the attack on her, the former Chief Justice, Cllr. Scott, said on a local radio station that her home had been attacked twice in a row, and she reported those incidents to the police and the Minister of Justice, but the government did not lift a finger to prevent the third attack.
During a press conference held on February 24, Mayor Koijee refuted the claim, saying he had no history of shedding blood in the country.
In June, the Liberia National Police (LNP), in the investigation into the murder saga of Charloe Musu, declared Former Chief Justice Gloria Musu-Scott and three others as prime suspects, with crimes ranging from Murder and Criminal Conspiracy, to False Alarm.
The police findings suggested that Cllr. Gloria Musu-Scott with three of her relatives, Gertrude Newton, Alice Johnson, and Rebecca Wisner, who were occupants of Cllr. Scott’s Residence and were at the crime scene, had been ascertained as prime suspects in the ghastly murder incident, based on thorough investigations that established that there was “no intruder’s trace” found at the home of Cllr. Scott.
During a press conference, the head of Crime Service Division (CSD) of the Liberian National Police, Prince Mulbah, said Police crime scene investigators found no break-ins to detect an invasion on the home of Cllr. Scott, thus giving them cause to advance the charges.
In furtherance, the LNP Crime and Investigation Division Head indicated that, beyond police investigation, the residence of the Former Chief Justice is well-fortified with physical security features of iron gates and bars, which makes it impossible for invader (s) to infiltrate the home without a signal of burglary.
