President George Manneh Weah returned to the country on Monday, July 10, 2023, with good news, following a successful trip to the States of Israel and Guinea Bissau.
Addressing reporters upon arrival, the President described his trip as holy, fruitful and beneficial to the country and people, disclosing that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has endorsed Liberia’s quest for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
President Weah, on Sunday, had made Liberia’s case for the non-permanent seat at the just ended 163rd Extraordinary Summit of ECOWAS, held in Bissau, the capital of Guinea Bissau.
The President sought the bloc’s unflinching support for his bid to be a Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council to represent the Western African Region for the period 2026-2027.
Regarding his trip to Israel, he said his delegation had healthy and fruitful talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netahyanh and President Isaac Herzog of the State of Israel on strengthening the bilateral ties subsisting between the two countries, and to foster more mutual benefits.
President Weah disclosed his trip was in the dear interest of the country, particularly on how Israel could be a help to the people of Liberia in terms of harnessing their advanced agricultural capacity.
The Liberian Leader also announced that Liberia is considering Israel’s request to open an embassy in Israel, saying that the Foreign Ministry will work out the detailed modalities.
“I think it is good for Liberia to have an embassy there because it will enable us to serve the interest of the citizens there, and for the enhancement of bilateral ties with Israel,” he stressed.
The President departed Liberia on July 1, 2023, for a working visit to the State of Israel, after which he flew to Guinea Bissau to attend the 163rd Extraordinary Summit of ECOWAS.
The Sixty-Third Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was held on July 9, 2023, in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.
The Heads of State considered reports from the Ninetieth Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting held from July 6 to 7, 2023, in Bissau and other issues affecting the region during their session.
