The Vice President of Liberia, Dr Jewel Howard-Taylor has received her third Honoris Causa (Honorary Degree) from the University of Calabar, the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
At the 33rd Convocation of the University, the Dean and Faculty of the University unanimously resolved to confer Doctor of Gender Development (Honoris Causa) on Liberia’s First female Vice President.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Itiunbe Akpagu emphasized that the conferment of the Honorary Degree is in recognition and celebration of Her Excellency’s erudite scholarship, humanitarianism, patriotism, political sagacity, outstanding leadership and utter commitment to championing of Gender Issues in Liberia and Africa at large.
Prof Akpagu intimated that Madam Vice President remains the JEWEL of Africa whose leadership credential is replete with massive successes.
VP Howard-Taylor According to dispatch from Nigeria, was then requested by the Vice Chancellor of the University to commission the project for the construction of 60 rooms hostel Block for Female Students.
The project which was funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria will accommodate about 240 female students.
In her response, the first Liberian Female Vice expressed profound gratitude for the recognition and promised to use the accolade as a motivation to strengthen her passion to do more in empowering women and girls across Liberia, Africa and the World at large.
She recounted that Calabar hosted she and her family 17 years ago before her return to Liberia and her subsequent election as Senior Senator of Bong County.
Madam Vice President commended the people of Calabar for the rapid transformation the city has experienced in terms of governance and infrastructural development.
The University of Calabar is one of the second generation Universities in Nigeria; founded in 1975 by the Federal Military Government of Nigeria. The University is located in Calabar, the Capital of Cross River State and has an enrollment capacity of about 45,000 students.
In a related development, the the Liberian Vice President has also paid a courtesy call on the Obong of Calabar at the Obong Kingdom.
Upon her visit to the Obong Palace, the Efik Monarch (King) Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi V welcomed Madam Vice President and delegation in a colourful ceremony.
The Obong Kingdom is one of Africa’s Oldest Kingdoms; the Kingdom has lasted for more than 900 years and the current King is the 78th in the line of succession.
The Kingdom plays a major role in the governance of the Cross River State and its capital Calabar.
