In celebration of Black History Month in the United States the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia is hosting the American gospel group: Oscar Williams & The Band of Life this week.
During their first trip to Africa, these “Musical Ambassadors” will be performing and discussing the origins of gospel, its connections to African American history, and its influence on all forms of American and international music.
Oscar Williams & The Band of Life have been a gospel music force in the United States for nearly two decades, but have also performed worldwide for the U.S. Government’s American Music Abroad and the Arts Envoys programs in 30 countries across South America, the Far East, the Middle East, and Europe.
Their first album Unstoppable released in 2006, topped the U.S. gospel charts.
They are excited that their first trip to Africa is to Liberia, with which the U.S. has the oldest and most enduring ties.
At their interfaith workshops at music academies and masterclasses for choirs, radio interviews, and performances the band will highlight the history of gospel and the unique musical connections between the United States and Liberia.
Oscar Williams & The Band of Life will be performing for FREE for the public at Centennial Pavilion this Sunday March 1st at 4 p.m.
For free tickets, you can line up outside of Centennial Hall at 1 p.m. this Sunday March 1st. Tickets will be issued on a first-come, first served basis until the tickets run out.
There will be only one ticket per customer, so you need to appear in person at Centennial Pavilion starting at 1 p.m. if you want a ticket.
At the Centennial Pavillioon performance the band will be collaborating with the Monrovia Community Mass Choir and the Choir of the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
And now, from Oscar Williams & The Band of Life, here is their original piece: “Heal our Land.”
