US Amb. McCarthy Visits IREDD

America’s Ambassador Accredited to Liberia, Michael A. McCarthy, visited and interacted with staff of the Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD) at their offices in Monrovia.

During the visitation on Thursday, April 13, 2023, Ambassador McCarthy congratulated IREDD for its’ 2022 Legislative Performance Monitoring Report, praised IREDD for the level of works being done and assureds the institution of the US Embassy support.

Recently, IREDD released its 2022 Legislative Performance Monitoring Report which among other things highlighted each legislator performance outcomes in line with their constitutional functions.

The Balance of Power (BOP) in decision-making in terms of (FOR and AGAINST) stands at 74% for and 26%, meaning 76 of the 103 legislators vote for just anything coming from the Executive for public good or bad they are always in support because they seem overly bargained and lack the political independence to provide the required balance, while 26% or 27 legislators always vote against just anything.

Additionally, the report highlighted are nine legislators for high plenary attendance and 32 legislators for low plenary; 11 legislators for frequent plenary participation times and 3 representatives did not speak at all in plenary during the 66 sittings.

Ambassador McCarthy expressed optimism that the report seems significant to direct citizens in the 2023 elections and clearly presents the reality of our governance system.

The Executive Director of IREDD, Matthias Yeanay thanked the US Ambassador for the visit and support shown IREDD in the discharge of its duties.

IREDD is Liberia’s lead Think Tank, evidence-based advocacy and democratic rights organization that channels the voices of ordinary citizens’ demands for socioeconomic justice, transparency and accountability at the national and local levels of governance processes in Liberia.
