The Acting Health Officer for Maryland County, Joyce Hallowanger, is advocating for the elevation of J. J. Dossen Memorial Hospital to a regional referral and teaching medical center. This upgrade, she argues, would not only improve medical services in the region but also enhance the training of future healthcare professionals.
Hallowanger emphasized that the hospital, which has recently received accreditation for a five-year family medicine program, plays a crucial role in training healthcare providers in person-centered care and social justice advocacy.
The facility currently provides essential surgical services to residents of River Gee, Grand Kru, and nearby Côte d’Ivoire.
Hallowanger also highlighted the necessity of designating comprehensive health center status to key facilities across the county, starting with the Pleebo Health Facility.
This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Health’s National Plan to improve emergency maternal and neonatal care in Pleebo Sodoken District, the county’s most densely populated area.
“Establishing Pleebo as a comprehensive health center will bring vital services closer to communities, ensuring access to preventive care and health education for everyone,” Hallowanger stated.
She noted that these advancements are vital for creating a resilient healthcare system capable of addressing both public health emergencies and everyday health needs for over 26,000 residents.
Hallowanger called for collaborative efforts among local government officials, community leaders, and stakeholders, including Partners In Health (PIH), to mobilize resources and effectively tackle health challenges.
“Together, we can strengthen our health infrastructure and empower our communities,” she said.
During the 10th anniversary celebration of Partners In Health-Liberia in Harper, Hallowanger praised the commitment of the County Health Team and PIH in building strong partnerships with local communities.
She highlighted the significant progress made in health service delivery over the past decade, particularly in maternal and child health, immunization, and the management of infectious and chronic diseases.
“We have worked tirelessly to increase access to healthcare for our most vulnerable populations, ensuring that no one is left behind,” she concluded.
