The Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia (CIUL) will be offering a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chinese language in a move to promote culture and friendship between Liberia and China.
The program, launched yesterday, is committed to training local Chinese language teachers, reserve teachers, top Chinese language professionals, among others, as the program is also arranged for 4 years.
During the first three years, study will be done at the UL, while the last year of the study will be conducted in China, if students meet the needed requirements, as enshrined within the program’s profiles.
Speaking Tuesday, September 26, 2023, during the launch of the program in Monrovia, the Charge d’affaires of Chinese Embassy to Liberia, Fan Erwei, said the Chinese is one of the six languages used by the UN and one of the most working languages in the world.
This, he said, “The Institute was established 15 years ago for Liberians to learn Chinese language and culture, and so today marks a new day of the development of the Chinese language in Liberia, as we launch a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chinese language and culture.”
Charge d’affaires Erwei added, “China is willing to work with Liberia to continually increase language cooperation, because CIUL and UL have had a strong cordial relationship as they have organized several successful activities over the years.”
Earlier giving a brief overview of the program, the CIUL Director, Dexter S. Sumo, characterized the launch as a great success to promote Liberia and China’s cultural heritage, adding that 100 students have graduated in all disciplines since the establishment of the CIUL.
Also speaking, UL vice president for Administration, Madam Beneta Joko Tarr, pledged the UL’s fullest commitment in giving support to make the program a success.

Furthermore, it is the only institution providing Chinese language courses for free and the only Chinese Test Center to organize HSK test and HSKK test in Liberia.
