The Ministry of Transport (MOT), in collaboration with the National Road Fund (NRF), has officially launched an Axle Load Control Implementation and Awareness Campaign aimed at preserving Liberia’s road infrastructure and enhancing road safety.
The launch event took place during a signing ceremony between the Ministry of Transport and WIDRA Liberia in Sinkor, where Minister of Transport Sirleaf Ralph Tyler underscored the critical importance of addressing vehicle overloading.
Minister Tyler highlighted that overloaded vehicle significantly contribute to road deterioration, causing extensive damage to roads, bridges, and other essential infrastructure.
He emphasized that such damage results in costly repairs and frequent maintenance, diverting funds that could otherwise support new development projects.
“The project is designed to ensure that drivers comply with weight limits and Axle Load Laws and Regulations to promote safe and efficient transportation. By properly distributing weight and adhering to regulations, drivers can help preserve the integrity of our roads and ensure public safety,” Minister Tyler stated.
He further stressed that overloaded vehicles compromise vehicle handling and braking systems, increasing the likelihood of accidents, fatalities, and unnecessary economic burdens on the National Road Fund due to frequent emergency repairs.
Minister Tyler pointed out that proper road maintenance reduces vehicle operating costs, enhances logistics efficiency, and facilitates trade, leading to increased economic activity and higher tax revenues, a portion of which directly supports the National Road Fund.
“Axle Load Control is key to ensuring infrastructure reliability, sustaining economic activities, and optimizing funds for further development,” he concluded.
Speaking at the event, the Manager of the National Road Fund, Joseta Neufville-Wento, emphasized that Axle Load Control is essential for cost-effective preservation of Liberia’s road infrastructure, a major national investment.
“Overloaded vehicles cause premature deterioration of pavements and bridges. Axle Load Control ensures compliance with weight regulations, reducing damage and lowering maintenance costs,” she explained.
She added that preventing overloading extends the lifespan of roads, enabling the government to redirect funds to critical projects such as road upgrades and new construction, rather than repeated repairs.
“This approach improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the Road Fund, ensuring better returns on investment. Systems like weighbridges generate revenue through fines for non-compliance, which can be reinvested into road maintenance and expansion,” Neufville-Wento stated.
Atty. Dave Dahn Diawoo Transport Consultant and Coordinator at the Technical Support Unit (TSU) of the Ministry of Transport, described Axle Load Control as a strategic measure for sustaining the National Road Fund.
“By minimizing road damage, reducing maintenance costs, and enhancing revenue streams, Axle Load Control supports economic development and ensures the longevity of road infrastructure,” he said.
He further emphasized that Axle Load Control is vital not only for sustainability and effective management of the National Road Fund but also for Liberia’s overall economic growth and development.
Diawoo issued a warning to drivers operating overweight vehicles, stating that penalties will be enforced, with fines directed into the government’s revenue account to support road redevelopment initiatives.
He concluded by urging drivers to adhere to weight regulations, drive responsibly, and contribute to preserving Liberia’s roads for future generations.
The Axle Load Control Awareness Campaign marks a significant step towards sustainable road infrastructure management in Liberia.
Through collaborative efforts, the Ministry of Transport and the National Road Fund aim to create a culture of compliance and responsibility among drivers and road users, ensuring safer and longer-lasting roads across the country.
This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to protecting national investments, promoting economic growth, and enhancing transportation efficiency in Liberia.
