To Intervene In Legislative Impasse: Religious Council To Set Up Peace Committee

By Solomon T. Gaye-Nimba

The Liberia International Religious Council (LIRC) Chairperson, Henry Paul, says the political battle among Representatives of the 55th Legislature is worrisome and does not frame Liberia’s political environment well among other nations.

Rev. Paul disclosed that plans are underway to meet the lawmakers so as to host a peace conference that will bring an end to the political crisis in the Capital Building.

According to Chairman Paul, discussions are underway among officials of the religious council to set-up a 12-member peace committee to meet with all parties to find common ground in a very peaceful way.

“The peace committee to be set-up will comprise of six bishops and six Imams who will travel to Monrovia for the meeting,” Chairman Paul disclosed.

“The political struggle geared toward the removal of Speaker Fonati Kofa is hampering national developments and also tarnishing the good reputation of Liberia to the outside world,” the LIRC Chairman averred.

“We don’t want any confusion nor are we not looking for winners in this case; what we want is peace in Liberia and peace must prevail among the members of the 55th Legislature,” Rev. Paul said.

The chairman disclosed that after meeting with all the parties, the program venue or county that will be designated to host the program will then be announced.

“The objective of this meeting is to settle the dispute in a peaceful way; the committee will host separate meetings with the majority and the minority members, Speaker Kofa, Vice President Jeremiah Kough and President Joseph Boakai,” Rev. Paul revealed.

The Liberia International Religious Council is among religious organizations operating in Liberia. It was accredited in 2015.
