On September 19, 2023, former Nimba County Assistant Superintendent for Development and former Assistant Minister for Youth Development of Liberia, Teeko Tozay Yorlay, earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Management Sciences (Public Administration-Peace Studies) from the Durban University of Technology, South Africa, having submitted a thesis titled: “Post-war Peacebuilding for Development in Ganta, Liberia.”
Dr. Yorlay previously earned a Master of Arts (MA) with distinction in International Relations from the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Liberia, Bachelor of Arts (BA) -Cum Laude in Political Science (Emphasis in International Relations) from the University of Liberia, and Postgraduate Diploma in the Management of Public and Development Sector Monitoring and Evaluation from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Dr. Yorlay is currently the only Liberian working temporarily since March 2023 in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA/DPO) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as an Associate Political Affairs Officer, having previously worked as Associate Civil Affairs Officer at the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).
Dr. Yorlay, who is affectionately referred to by his mentees, friends, and comrades as TTY, now being modified as Dr. TTY, has been a youthful integrity icon whose honesty and fight against graft, waste, and abuse in public service came to prominence when he was named by former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as Assistant Superintendent for Development of Nimba County at the young age of 32 years back in 2012.
The statements “It is better to be an honest poor man than being a dishonest rich man” and “We are all the ones we have long been waiting for to make our communities, societies, countries, and the world far better than they are now,” among others, are attributable to Dr. TTY.
