The 2024 Soccer for Peace Cup, hosted by Liberia Football Association’s National First Division league team Fassell Football Club, is set to bring a high-profile sporting event to Buchanan City in Grand Bassa County.
Scheduled to run from September 11-14, 2024, the tournament promises to be a significant boost for the local economy and a celebration of community spirit.
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has emphasized the positive impact the tournament will have on Buchanan and its residents. According to FC Fassell’s Secretary General, John Winn, and Tournament Coordinator, Peterking Quaye, the decision to host the event in Grand Bassa County is a gesture of appreciation to the community residents for their unwavering support of the club.
Winn and Quaye, who arrived in Buchanan early Wednesday morning to oversee preparations, outlined the tournament’s benefits. They noted that the event will not only provide a platform for local traders to engage in small-scale commerce, but will also offer hotel accommodation contracts to local establishments, boosting the county’s economy.
“This tournament is a token of our gratitude to the people of Grand Bassa for their steadfast support,” Winn said. “During the week-long event, we will promote peace through sport and create numerous opportunities for the local community.”
The LOC is working diligently to ensure a successful event, with preparations focused on enhancing the Doris Williams Sports Stadium and its surroundings. Winn highlighted that improvements will include upgrades to the access roads leading to the stadium, contributing to the overall development of Liberian football infrastructure.
The Soccer for Peace Cup, now in its second edition, is dedicated to fostering peace, unity, and social cohesion through football. This year’s tournament will feature three foreign clubs: FC Kallon from Sierra Leone, Sanway Sports from San Pedro in Ivory Coast, and FC Cotonou from Benin. The guests are expected to compete alongside host FC Fassell for the pre-season championship.
The event is expected to draw significant attention and participation, providing a valuable opportunity for the community of Buchanan and showcasing Liberia’s commitment to the promotion of peace and community development through sports.
