Montserrado County Senator, Saah Joseph, has summed the total amount of salaries a Liberian Senator earns annually to $90,000 United States dollars excluding Liberian dollars.
The disclosure made by Senator Joseph in the middle of the economic challenges led Liberians who had gone to witness the ceremony to murmur over what they term as astronomical fees being paid to one lawmaker while police officers, teachers, Nurses and doctors who are saving lives, providing security, and molding the minds of Liberians are underpaid.
Months ago, Montserrado County Senator, Abraham Darious Dillon unearthed a Senator’s monthly salary in the amount of US$15,000, and he was the first Senator in the history of Liberia to shrink his salary and return the balance to the country for development and therein implored his colleagues to follow suit.
Buttressing Dillon’s effort and even beyond, Senator Saah Joseph waved his annual salaries in the amount of US$90,000 to facilitate the construction of a multi-purpose technical high school and mini college in District #13 in Liberia.
Speaking during program making the grand breaking ceremony of the Jennie High School (JHS) and Community College Multipurpose educational building to be erected at the New Georgia Gulf Field, Senator Joseph explained that he will add extra $10,000 to complete his initial contribution for the construction of the College to USD100, 000.
“I earn US$90,000 annually excluding gas slips and benefits. The project is worth one million Untied States dollars. So, I will make available my salaries from January to December towards the project. And I will make available the balance US$10,000 to complete my initial support to the project to USD100, 000.
“Due to the importance of the project, I am negotiating with the bank to make available US$50,000 initially for the execution of the project and the balance USD50, 000 to be paid shortly,” Sen. Joseph assured contractors.
The Mini college which Senator Joseph will be completed in the next three months, is in fulfillment of his promise he made to the people of District #13 when he was then Representative of the District.
According to him, when the college is completed, will host over 8,000 students and absolutely tuition-free.
The project, Senator Joseph asserted when completed, will be a modern three storey building comprising computer lab and will be furnished with all school materials available.
Joseph who is referred to as ‘Ebola Hero’ further intimated that currently, people have started making donations ahead of the completion of the building. Adding, “Currently, chairs and tables and many other items relative to the mini college are already in the country.”
