Bong County District 6 Representative, Moima Briggs Mensah, has described the plans to remove Fonati Koffa as speaker as sadden, frustrating, disheartening, and troubling for Liberia’s development.
She said, at a time when they should be executing their duties and responsibilities in the interest of the Liberian people as lawmakers, they are fighting amongst themselves, making baseless arguments that are insensitive and will not profit the citizens of the country.
She made the statement in an exclusive interview with journalists recently emphasizing that the Legislature is governed by rules, as such, people who are calling for the ousting of Speaker Koffa, should obtain the required numbers in conformity with law, making reference to former Speakers Edwin Melvin Snowe and Alex Tyler’s removals.
Rep. Mensah further noted that it is sadden that some of her colleagues have been induced financially to make decisions that are not in the best interest of the society, nothing that those decisions have the propensity to retrogress the nation and undermine the gains they have made.
Meanwhile, the Bong County lawmaker has reiterated her commitment to the Speaker of the 55th Legislature until a due process is done in removing him.
“I stand for the law; I want the right thing to be done. So, I’m sitting under the gavel of the Speaker because he remains my speaker. If anyone wants to remove him, until they can duly remove him, not so, he is my Speaker. I elected him as my Speaker, and I will still support him until they succeed in removing him,” Rep. Mensah asserted.
Rep. Mensah is however calling on the Liberian people that if this situation continues up to the 15 of next month, their salaries should be withheld because they are not working for the Liberian people.
She is at the same calling for an audit at the Legislature, something she believes will bring about transparency, accountability, and good governance in line with the tenants of democracy which will put Liberia on the right trajectory.
