River Gee Sails Through To Final

By S. Siapha Mulbah
River Gee County has sailed through the semifinals of the National County Sports Meet, booking a place at the 2023/2024 grand finale.
With a huge pull out of surprises, River Gee County cruised to the final with a 2-0 hit on Grand Bassa County on Wednesday at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex during the semifinal stage.
It was a tough and unpredictable match for both sides, judging from the resilience of the two defenses during the first half.
River Gee and Grand Bassa Counties refused to concede goals after several chances were created.
But the southeasterners came through at the last quarter of the second half with two strikes that took them to victory and booked them a final ticket.
On 71 minutes, Daniel Toe collaborated with Blamoh Weah and Derrick Weah to mount pressure on Grand Bassa and grab the first goal.
Derrick Weah was the first to hit the back of the net for Coach Daniel Saslay and his boys to wake up the hope of prominent supporters of River Gee, in the face of Senate Pro-tempore, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, and other Bassa leaders.
To finish all things for Gbezohn, Blamoh Weah, on 81 minutes, sealed the deal by scoring the second goal to confirm River Gee’s victory.
He drove through with a powerful strike beyond the reach of the Bassa backline.
Their territory was never a safe zone with the pace that the ‘Weahs’ in Blamoh and Derrick brought to the game.
River Gee County is now the only representative of the South Eastern region of Liberia in the National County Sports Meet and will be up for the grand finale against whoever wins today’s match between the competition’s defending champions Nimba County, and Lofa County.
The boys of Fishtown have been a formidable force in the ongoing county meet from the group stage where they served as the host of the official opening ceremony, and the host of group A where they hosted Maryland, Sinoe, and Grand Gedeh counties.
From the group stage, River Gee took on Bong County last Saturday for the opening of the quarter finals at the same venue, and confidently dominated the match by sending Bong back for better preparation to make a comeback if possible next season.
Since the 2-1 victory that Saturday, the national stadium has gradually started winning more admirations for the lone south eastern team that is striving to fully represent the region after the controversial out-booting of Grand Gedeh County by Nimba on Monday.
The team is currently considered as one of the competition’s favorites. Several pundits have noted that the strength and maturity shown by the defense and midfield of River Gee will continue to pose threats to teams that will meet them along the way.
It is also believed that one of the factors taking the team to victories in the competition is the fact that not many of the players are known with big names and huge popularity, unlike other counties, which makes them impossible to predict.
