Montserrado County District 2 Representative Jimmy W. Smith has erected a well-built modern bridge costing over US$26,000 to connect his district to District 3 represented by Ceebee Barshall.
According to some residents, with the construction of the over 350 kilometer bridge, residents are expected to utilize it as it will reduce the risk posed to communities that are in the two districts.
The bridge was built in honor of the late Roosevelt Mayango, a prominent resident of the Christian Community who met his untimely demise at the hands of evil minded men who gruesomely chopped him to death allegedly with the use of cutlasses while he was manually constructing the footpath bridge for people to cross the small creek over which the bridge was built.
Speaking to reporters on the country’s Independence Day when the project was officially dedicated, the chief engineer of the J.J. Construction Company which built the bridge, Festus Jallah, said the bridge is very strategic and should be overwhelmingly appreciated by the residents of the two districts, adding that Rep. Smith deserves countless praises for constructing such a modern bridge from his personal income in the absence of the District Development Funds from the government.
According to Mr. Jallah, the construction of the bridge brings relief not only to ordinary residents of both communities but students who are the direct beneficiaries as well as other residents who will now move about freely without any risk or danger as was the case in the past.
In response, Rep. Smith indicated that he owes it to the people of District 2 who overwhelmingly elected him to represent their interest at the 54th National Legislature in 2017 and as such, he will continue to do his best to deliver to his commitment or promises made to them during 2017 political campaign.
However, it is barely four years since Rep. Smith was elected and the completion of this modern bridge is one of his major projects in fulfillment of his campaign promise though he just received from government some US$30, 000 for district engagement.
