An audit led by Representative Zinnah A. Norman has unveiled troubling breaches of mining regulations by several Chinese companies operating in Electoral District 1, triggering immediate enforcement actions and stern warnings of suspension.
The ten-day investigation, carried out by Rep. Norman’s Chief of Office Staff, Mohammed Kanneh, and a team of auditors, examined the operations of eight Chinese mining companies engaged in gold and mineral extraction across the district.
The findings reveal a stark pattern of environmental disregard, broken promises to local communities, and illegal operations that could have long-term implications for both the people and land of Gbarpolu.
According to the report, it was uncovered in the GBAYASU Community, Korgninga, where a Chinese company identified as Cosmos began large-scale mining operations without any formal agreement or community consultation.
The report maintains that residents say the company moved in excavators and ore crushers under the cover of silence, violating national laws that require a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with host communities.
“We woke up one morning and saw heavy machines on our land. They never met with us. They never asked for permission,” the community said.
The audit team ordered an immediate halt to all Cosmos operations. Mohammed Kanneh, speaking on behalf of Rep. Norman’s office, made it clear that the district would not stand by while companies trample on community rights and ignore environmental responsibilities.
“All companies must work in full transparency and with respect for the people. Any company that fails to live up to its responsibilities will be shut down,” Kanneh stated.
The audit also found that two other companies breached their MOU commitments, including promises to hire locals, repair key roads, and contribute to local schools. Instead, residents report being left out of employment opportunities while watching their land degraded and livelihoods threatened.
This marks the second time under a year that Rep. Norman has intervened in mining activities due to non-compliance. His office has signaled a strong commitment to holding foreign companies accountable and ensuring that development projects uphold both national standards and local dignity.
“We’re not against investment. But we demand responsible investment—investment that uplifts communities, not exploits them,” Kanneh expressed.
