Grand Gedeh county district 2 Representative, Marie G. Johnson, has called on the government to take immediate action in response to a U.S. deportation plan targeting nearly 2,000 Liberians living in the United States.
Rep. Johnson communications before the House of Representatives, Johnson raised concerns about the impact of President Donald Trump’s mass deportation initiative, which she described as the largest in U.S. history.
She emphasized the urgent need for Liberia to prepare for an influx of returning citizens who may face economic and social challenges upon arrival.
Rep. Johnson stressed that the deportation of Liberians, many of whom have lived in the U.S. for years, could create serious reintegration challenges.
“It is crucial for us to understand the potential impact on our citizens and to prepare adequately for their return. We cannot allow them to return home without the necessary support structures in place,” Johnson told her fellow lawmakers.
To mitigate the effects of the deportation, Johnson outlined several key actions that she urged the House of Representatives to consider which includes, but not limited to conducting a thorough review of the number of Liberians affected and their specific reintegration needs and developing programs that provide housing, employment opportunities, healthcare, and education to ease their transition.
“ We have to seek assistance from the United Nations and non-governmental organizations to help provide resources and aid, inform deported Liberians about available support services to help them adjust and open discussions with the U.S. government to advocate for special considerations, extended timelines, or exemptions for certain individuals.”
Johnson urged her colleagues to act swiftly, warning that failure to prepare ahead could lead to a humanitarian crisis. “This is not just a political issue-it is about the lives and futures of our fellow Liberians,” she said.
The House of Representatives is expected to deliberate on Johnson’s proposals in the coming days.
