Representative Musa Bility of Nimba County’s District 7 has announced a voluntary 50% reduction in his salary and benefits to support health related activities.
The Chairman of the Rule of Law Caucus emphasized that the funds will be directed toward supporting the Saclepea Comprehensive Health Center, which has suffered a significant budget cut.
Rep. Bility made the announcement on his Facebook page on February 6, calling on his colleagues in the 55th Legislature to take similar steps, emphasizing the need for collective action in response to the economic strain caused by the suspension of U.S. assistance through USAID.
“To this end, as the Representative of District 7 in Nimba County, I wish to announce today that I have taken the first step toward mitigating this crisis. I call upon my colleagues in the 55th Legislature to follow suit,” Bility stated.
According to him, the Saclepea Comprehensive Health Center, a critical medical institution in his district, recently saw its 2025 budget slashed from US$120,000 to US$75,000, hampering its ability to provide essential services.
“One of the most pressing issues resulting from the budget cut is the hospital’s inability to purchase a vehicle for emergency response and mobility of medical staff,” he explained.
Rep. Bility pledged that his redirected salary would specifically go toward the acquisition of a pickup truck, ensuring that doctors and nurses can effectively reach those in need.
“This is not just about making a financial contribution but about demonstrating leadership, patriotism, and selflessness. We must acknowledge the economic shock that the abrupt loss of U.S. aid will create and take proactive steps to cushion its impact,” he said.
The reduction in U.S. assistance through USAID has raised concerns across Liberia, as it threatens to destabilize key sectors, including healthcare, education, and security.
Bility underscored the importance of local leaders stepping up to fill the gap and encouraged the Legislature, Judiciary, and Executive branches to adopt similar measures.
“I challenge all members of the Legislature, the Chief Justice, and members of the Judiciary to take similar actions. We must prove that we are willing to bear the burden alongside our citizens and do whatever we can to protect those who entrusted us with leadership,” he urged.
Bility also commended President Boakai for taking proactive steps to mitigate the impact of the crisis, signaling his support for measures aimed at ensuring economic stability.
As Liberia faces economic uncertainty, Bility’s move is seen as a call to action for those in positions of power to prioritize the well-being of the people. “This contribution may seem small in the grand scheme of things, but I hope it inspires other leaders to act,” he said.
Rep. Bility has highlighted the suspension of U.S. aid as a significant threat to Liberia’s economic and social stability. “This is the time for authentic leadership,” he concluded. “Let us lead by example.”
