The president of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), Mustapha Raji, officially broke grounds for the refurbishment of Gompa Sports Stadium in Nimba County as part of efforts to move sports development to another level in Liberia.
This milestone event marks the fulfillment of a long-standing promise to the people of Nimba County, as the stadium is set to undergo a comprehensive transformation into a modern sports facility.
During the heartwarming ceremony held over the weekend, Raji expressed his unwavering commitment to advancing football in Liberia. “Today is a testament to our commitment not only to Nimba County but to the growth of football throughout Liberia,” he stated. “With FIFA’s support, we are laying the foundation for a facility that will inspire youth, cultivate talent, and serve as a pillar for our communities.”
The program was attended by local sports enthusiasts from different parts of Liberia, dignitaries, and members of the LFA Executive Committee along with businessman Floyd Tomah who had since been committed to witnessing events of such in the county.
The refurbishment project, awarded to Dutch firm Edelgrass, is expected to commence on November 4, 2024, with a timeline of six months for completion. The upgrades will include the installation of artificial turf, an underground sprinkler system, stadium lighting, roofing, and a generator for reliable power supply. These enhancements aim to bring Gompa Stadium up to international standards, positioning it as a premier venue for sporting events and a hub for nurturing local talents.
This initiative is funded through the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) Forward program, reflecting Raji’s vision for a stronger, more inclusive sports environment in Liberia. The excitement was palpable among the gathered supporters as Raji and LFA officials took part in the ceremonial groundbreaking, symbolizing a new era for local sports infrastructure.
In his remarks, Raji emphasized the broader implications of the refurbishment for Liberia’s sports community. He reassured attendees of the LFA’s dedication to not only improving Gompa Stadium but also to refurbishing other stadia across the country. “We will continue to explore opportunities for the improvement and promotion of football in Liberia,” he affirmed.
The local sports community has rallied behind Raji’s vision, pledging their commitment to maintaining the stadium once the renovations are completed. With the promise of a modernized Gompa Sports Stadium on the horizon, the people of Nimba County are filled with optimism for a brighter future in local sports.
As the ceremony concluded, the atmosphere was charged with hope and enthusiasm, showcasing the LFA’s dedication to elevating sports across Liberia and providing opportunities for young athletes to thrive.
