The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has initiated collaborative discussions with the Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia (OWECC-L) to support its mission of promoting justice and accountability.
During a recent meeting in Monrovia, PUL leadership, headed by Julius Kanubah, reaffirmed its commitment to OWECC-L’s objectives.
This collaboration aimed to address wartime atrocities committed between 1979 and 2003 and foster transparency.
President Kanubah underscored the critical role of the media, stating, “For OWECC-L to fulfill its mandate, it must engage with media organizations and journalists through the PUL, which represents the nation’s media and communication practitioners.”
He highlighted the necessity of public engagement through the media to build credibility and garner widespread support for OWECC-L’s initiatives.
The Executive Director of OWECC-L, Barbu Jallah, shared similar views, emphasizing the Office’s dedication to public education and transparency. “We have nothing to hide,” he said.
He reaffirmed the commitment to keeping the public informed.
Jallah acknowledged the PUL’s vital role in facilitating outreach, noting, “PUL is well-positioned to partner with our Office and civil society organizations to ensure effective community engagement.”
OWECC-L was established under Executive Order No. 131 by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on May 2, 2024.
Its mandate includes devising the framework and processes for setting up a Special War Crimes Court and a National Anti-Corruption Court in Liberia.
The PUL’s support for the establishment of both courts aligns with its mission to promote democracy, transparency, and accountability in Liberia.
