The government through the Ministry of Public Works has formulated a high-level Intra-Governmental Agency Taskforce under a Joint Implementation exercise.
The exercise is to ensure the clearing of streets, roads, markets, garages, removal of makeshift structures, rehabilitation of water and sewer lines, rehabilitation of waste transfer stations and the landfill, pollution controls, and the continuous clearing of huge piles of waste within the cities of Monrovia and Paynesville, including their environs.
The work of the Intra-Governmental Agency Taskforce, amongst other things, will also ensure compliance with the existing Zoning Laws and Regulations of Liberia to establish actual ownership of land and properties, to stop the continuous abuse of water lands, and prevent flooding across communities as the rainy season ensues.
The Intra-Governmental Agency Taskforce comprises the Ministry of Public Works (MPW), Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), Paynesville City Corporation (PCC), Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), Ministry of Transport (MOT), Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), Liberia Land Authority (LLA), and the Liberia National Police (LNP).
Making special remarks at the occasion marking the formation of the Taskforce on March 26, Public Works Minister Roland Layfette Giddings, rallied the consolidated efforts of the constituent members of the Taskforce in keeping with the President’s ARREST Agenda, of which sanitation is a major pillar.
Minister Giddings also used the occasion to call on the public and other stakeholders to cooperate in giving the city and its environs a facelift.
Monrovia City Mayor, John Charuk Siafa, asserted that the formulation and subsequent implementation of regulations are not what he would call “a quick exercise”; rather, the task-force is committed to ensuring that its goals are achieved, beginning with community deployment teams.
Mayor Siafa however called on the media, as part of awareness, to help in educating the public on waste management across Monrovia and its environs, terming media houses as an integral part in the drive for a clean city.
